STYLE CHALLENGE | ON THE EDGE WHITE SPACE

Hi everyone, welcome to the month of July. This month I’m hosting the STYLE CHALLENGE over at The Lilypad and I’ve noticed that lately I’m pinning lots of white space pages that have all the elements, photos and text aligned to the edge. So this month lets create an ON THE EDGE white space page where everything is placed to one side. You can use the top, bottom, left or right edges so long as its all contained on one of those sides.

For all the challenge details head over to The Lilypad Challenge Pad Forum and have a look at all the other challenges ready for you to enjoy!
I can't wait to see your ON THE EDGE white space pages.

THE LILYPAD | FEBRUARY STYLE CHALLENGE

Wow how much fun was MOC this year? I can’t believe how everyone powered through the Jan challenges and now we’re all ready to be inspired by the February ones! This month I’m hosting the HEART IT |Style Challenge. Because Valentines falls in the month of February, I thought why not make a page that celebrates the people, pets, places and things in our life that get that ticker of ours fluttering. I can’t think of a better way to do that than by creating a page that has a huge big love filled HEART, smack bang in the centre of our page!

Here is my page and yep you guessed it, of course I scrapped Mr Dan. I’m so lucky to share my life with this kind and cute guy and needed a way to represent how much he makes my heart flutter, so I stacked a few dimensional paper hearts to show him exactly how much I luvs him!

(Note: Each heart represents an infinite number of hearts, so thats pretty big right? hehe)

For extra inspiration I have put together a HEART IT | PINTEREST BOARD which has tonnes of great ideas to inspire your pages. For all the challenge criteria scoot over to the February Challenge thread found at the The Lilypad forum. You can check out all the other cool challenges this month and be in the running for some great % OFF deals if you complete all eight for the month.

I really can't wait to see your loved up HEART pages in the gallery!

LEVEL UP | NOVEMBER STYLE CHALLENGE

Hello Everyone, You probably didn’t notice but I was MIA last month in the challenges but I’m excited to be back with a new STYLE CHALLENGE which I have called LEVEL UP. This one is all about the fundamentals of a HORIZONTAL LINE in art. Lines applied horizontally accentuate width often evoking feelings of stability, grounding and add emphasis and direction that really help define the edges of a form. I love seeing structured pages that have little unexpected points of interest. So when you design your page, break it down to 3 main levels perhaps you’ll start with a PANORAMIC PHOTO or SERIES OF PHOTOS that span across the top of your page. Then create your TITLE which spans underneath the photo and finally adding a JOURNAL BLOCK that lays horizontal under your title work. Which ever order you choose make sure that your Horizontal spans are the same width or there about to create that structured balanced and levelled up look.

GETTING CREATIVE WITH THIS STYLE:

  • You can be as creative as you like with your journal blocks think in columns or perhaps mix it up with a JC and JOURNALING so long as it is all contained within its own Journal level/span.
  • You can use multiple photos so long as they all are on the one PHOTO level/span.
  • Your TITLE can be a series of words or elements that help convey your title or even add a clustered grouping for extra flair and a point of interest so long as all of that is on one level/span.

Here is my page. I kept it pretty structured but added some extra design elements to my last level the Title to really create some drama and point of interest. This also helped to balance all the stacked goodness in the cluster under the photos.

For extra inspiration I have put together a PINTEREST BOARD and below I pulled together a quick reference so you can see how creative you can get with this style by adding some unexpected design elements and flair.

Remember our monthly challenge rules:

Your page must contain at least 75% Lilypad product. Your page should be posted to the Lilypad Gallery and then linked to the NOVEMBER Challenge Layouts thread so it can be tracked, and to this thread.

The Lilypad uses a percent system for our challenges; the number of challenges you participate in determines the store discount you will receive at the end of the month:

2 challenges = 10% off
4 challenges = 20% off
6 challenges = 30% off

If you complete 7 challenges, you will receive a coupon for 30% off, plus you will be entered to win a $50 gift certificate from the Lilypad! The first seven challenges will be posted on the first of the month; the eighth challenge is the BYOC challenge, which is posted on BYOC release day. Each page counts for one challenge (you cannot use one layout for multiple challenges).

Have fun with those horizontal sight lines. I can't wait to see YOUR LEVELLED UP pages in the gallery!
Happy scrapping

ARTISTRY OF STORYTELLING DAWN’S WAY

This month over at The Lilypad I am hosting the STYLE Challenge. We decided to make this month a dedication to beautiful Dawn Inskip who sadly passed away last month. As you know she was a well regarded and talented designer at TLP which also extended within the broader digital/artistic community. This months Style challenge I thought we could pay homage to the ways Dawn, conveyed her personality and how she shared her life stories and experiences through her scrapbooking creations.

As you all know Dawn, had a quirky side. She was an Illustrative Mixed Media artist which made her stand out with her distinctive style. Her work was energetic, emotive and figurative. Her kits burst with colour, tantalised us with texture and kept us admiring her clever ephemera stacks and layered artworks. She was also quick with a witty quip often sharing funny tongue in cheek quotes or more positive type of affirmations to inspire you in your journey of self care. She was also a lover of flora and fauna often the keystones in her design and creative works.

Dawn aligned herself with being a fun and funky mixed media artist and I couldn’t think of a better way to describe her style, except that I love how her kits are a collection of gathered and collected finds lending themselves to an ‘Assemblage /Collage’ style of art too. They include torn and curled edge papers and photos. Sublime water colour and painterly textures with stitched layers and typographical word art and interspersed with many found objects to evoke even more emotion.

Since Dawn shared so much of herself I think it would be fun to create a page in her style. So let’s create a MIXED MEDIA page. This style also lends itself to COLLAGE or ASSEMBLAGE which is synonymous with Dawn’s creative kits and scrapbooking style.
As an example I have created my page in a mixed media style with lots of paint, textures, torn papers and a few key elements to convey the sentiment.
‘BE ORIGINAL'

For all the Challenge details and more ,check out the August Challenge thread over at The Lilypad and join us in celebrating the life and creative genius that was Dawn Inskip.
In Memory of a wonderful artist.
